Achilles Moral Guide Or Moral Taboo - 1572 Words

Achilles: Moral Guide? Or Moral Taboo? In the modern world we are surrounded by technology and as a result the buzzing of television sets, computers monitors, and cellular devices continuously fills the air to the point that it almost seems to consume us. With this technology we stay connected through social media, text, email one another, go to school, do our jobs, and even grocery shop. Though this technology is fairly new our dependency on these devices has grown rapidly recently and is still continuously growing more and more every day. As a result of our transition to becoming the technological society we are today we have to realize we have let it transform not only how we do things and stay connected to one another, but how we see the world in general, and even how we set our moral standards. In fact, it has changed our society so rapidly that I frequently find myself asking how does our societies moral standards compare to that of those in the ancient times. When I say ancient I don’t mean a few hundred ye ars. I mean back when some of the greatest pieces of technology available where considered the wheel, the chariot and trench irrigation instead of the 3-D printers, and touch screen devices we have in the 21st century, and back when bloody wars were fought for honor and land instead of the to the death battle for cell phone signal you see in everyday America. Legallization of Marijuana anti Essay Example For Students

Legallization of Marijuana anti Essay Drug use is becoming more common today than in recent years. Almost anywhere we look, we can find some relation to drugs or drug paraphernalia. In fact, 63% of you stated in my survey that you had smoked marijuana in the past. That number is scary, since 81% of you are under 25 years of age and have your whole lives ahead of you. Some of you may be thinking So What Bill Clinton has admitted smoking marijuana, and he is President. Well, that surely is not a good attitude to have considering the damage that marijuana may cause to your body. Sure, many of you may not change your lifestyle after today, but I hope to make you think of what you may be getting yourself in to. This afternoon I will give you both sides of the issue. I will try to persuade you to stay away from marijuana in turning you against this dangerous drug. Many supporters of marijuana claim that hemp can be a very resourceful plant. Hemp is considered to contain less than one percent tetrahydrocannabinols (THC) (Pluff 1). THC is the psychoactive chemical found in marijuana. Hemp can be confused with marijuana and considered the same, but do not let this fool you. Marijuana comes from the flowers or buds of the hemp plant. These buds are what contains the THC and gives the user the high effect (Pluff 1). Other nations such as Europe have registered varieties of hemp seeds that contain less than .03 percent of THC including the buds (Pluff 1). Now that you know what hemp is, lets look at its uses. Hemp fiber can be turned in to rope, canvas, and paper, and this is only a few of the uses. The rope that is made with hemp is said to be resistant to both fresh water and salt water. It is also considered better than most conventional rope by its strength and holding power. Another product that can be made from hemp is canvas. This canvas is very useful in making tents, sails, and even the covers on early settlers wagons. Like the rope, the canvas also stands up well against water, and ninety percent of ships sails were made of hemp canvas before the nineteenth century. The last product I am going to talk about is hemp paper. This paper is much softer than conventional paper, and it is stated that, one acre of hemp can replace four acres of forest (Pluff 2). This paper also does not yellow or crumble with age, a common complaint with conventional paper (Pluff 1). You may be wondering why such a useful plant is illegal, well let me tell you the other side of the story. Marijuana is said to be useful in the medical field as a cure for some disease. It is also an argument that smoking marijuana does not cause any side affects. I will prove this to be untrue, and a myth of society. The first claim by the supporters of marijuana is for medical reasons. Through much research doctors have found that marijuana may be a treatment for such illnesses as glaucoma, cancer, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). In fact, Proposition 215 just passed in California and Arizona giving citizens the right to smoke marijuana for medical reasons (Medical 1). One thing that is overlooked with this is that marijuana is not a cure, but a relief from the pain suffered by these citizens. If it is a relief from pain the sufferer is looking for, there are many other options to consider before choosing something as dangerous as marijuana. It only takes a little common sense to figure that something that is considered illegal by the Federal Government could not be used as a cure for any illness. Wisconsin lists marijuana under Schedule I of the Uniformed Controlled Substance Act. This means that any drugs under Schedule I, including marijuana, are not useful in curing any known illness. Schedule I is also where all the most serious drugs are listed. This puts marijuana in the same class with heroin and cocaine. Another problem with marijuana is the affects on the male and female body. One way frequent marijuana use affects males is by Gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the male breast tissue (Jones 51). This disease is not well known to the general public. This may be because males who get the disease usually keep the symptoms to themselves and not risk embarrassment. The next problem with males and marijuana is the reduction of their sperm count. Sperm counts in males were measured, and after a month of heavy smoking the sperm count was reduced by as much as 70 percent (Jones 62). Along with the reduction of the sperm count, the male has a reduction of testosterone. Testosterone is the principal male hormone and responsible for the growth of the male reproductive system. This drop in the sperm count and reduction of testosterone may not see m too important now but like I mentioned before, 81 percent of you are under age 25 and this may affect your lives dramatically in the future. Marijuana affects females by disrupting nerve pathways in the brain which may lead to infertility. A study done on monkeys at the University of California at Davis, showed that when the female monkeys were given increased amounts of THC they were more likely to neglect their offspring (Jones 71). A problem with marijuana use by pregnant females is the possibility that the baby may me born with deformities or even stillborn (Jones 72). Females have also shown an increase in testosterone levels which is the opposite of the male user. An affect that takes no side in users of marijuana is short term memory loss. (Ray 435). In everyday use, the marijuana user has a hard time recalling information that they may have just learned minutes before. The frequent user may also experience loss in time sense. With this the marijuana user feels that more ti me has passed than actually has elapsed. The final thing usually affected is tracking behavior. This may lead to crashing a motor vehicle because the impaired driver could not keep their attention on the road in which they were driving. .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b , .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b .postImageUrl , .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b , .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b:hover , .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b:visited , .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b:active { border:0!important; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b:active , .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ufda649d45e836241998762651b45236b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Book report boundaries EssayTo sum it all up, marijuana use is increasing among individuals. Almost everywhere we look there is support for this drug. This does not make sense in a society that is hung up on looking good and living a full life. Everyday we are making improvements to our society and making America a better place to live. I feel that with the legalization of marijuana we will begin to take a step backwards. One can only wonder, if marijuana was legalized what would drug supporters pick next. And remember that when the commercial says This buds is for you do not believe them, just say no! Short-Run Production and Long-Run Production free essay sample

According to Sloman, (2004), production is the transformation of inputs into outputs by firms in order to earn profit. Production can be divided into two types, that is short-run production and long-run production. Production in the short-run is the production period of time over which at least one factor is fixed as production in the long-run is the production period of time long enough for all factors to be varied. As mentioned by Sloman, (2004), production in the short-run is subject to diminishing returns. The law of diminishing (marginal) return applies whereby there will be a point when each extra unit of the variable factor will produce less extra output than the previous unit when the increasing amount of a variable factor are used with a given amount of a fixed factor. For example, a fixed factor would be the factory as the variable factor would be labour. As the factory is a fixed factor, the output of the factory will only be increased if the number of employers employed is increased and as more and more workers are hired, the factory would become more crowded making it uncomfortable for the workers to produce at an optimal rate. The opportunity cost is the cost of any activity measured in the expense of the firm. To apply the principle of opportunity cost to the firm, the factors of production it is using must be discovered and the sacrifice involved must be measured. Factors of the firm’s production can be divided into to categories. Explicit cost, which costs are not owned by the firm. (Sloman, 2004) Explicit costs are the payments made to the factors of production to outside suppliers of inputs, namely rental for land, salary and wages for labour, bills and interests of capital. Implicit cost, which factors are already owned by the firm (Sloman, 2004). Implicit costs are cost which does not require payment inform of money to any third party but payment as the form of sacrifice of come other alternatives. Such examples of implicit cost of the firm are the opportunity lost by the firm when it decides to use the building it owns rather than to let it out to receive rental or the opportunity lost by the firm’s owner when he decides to start a company than to work under someone else with a stable income. In the short run production, there are 3 aspects of costs to be considered. (DBM CD) 1. Total Costs (TC) = Total fixed cost (TFC) + Total variable cost (TVC), which are the total cost of production as more units are being produced 2. Average Cost (AC) = TC/Quantity (Q), which are the costs which decreases as output increases; and rises again at a certain point 3. Marginal Cot (MC) = TCÂ ¬1-TC0/Q1-Q0, which changes as the output differs, initially decreasing than rising again. Graph1 Graph 2 As seen on Graph 1, the total fixed cost line is parallel to the quantity at a certain value of cost as the total variable cost line start from the value 0 of both quantity and total cost. Thus, total costs are the sum of the total fixed cost and the total variable cost. Even if the is no output, there would be a fixed cost, so the total cost of the firm at 0 output would only be the total fixed cost. As on graph 2, the AFC continuously falls as output rises. Applying the law of diminishing returns, both the MC and the ATC curve shows that the costs of production falls as quantity increases and rises up again at a certain point. This happens when the workforce necessary to produce a higher output is more compared to an optimal output by current workforce causing a hike in the MC and ATC. As mentioned above, production in the long run is the period of time that is enough to change the quantity of all fixed inputs, whereby all factors in of production are variable. Costs per unit Economies of ScaleConstant return to scaleDiseconomies of scale Qty of Output Graph extracted from DBM CD, page 43 In the section of economies of scale from the graph, it shows that the cost per unit for each output decreases as the quantity of output increases, otherwise, cost of production per unit is getting cheaper as the scale of production increases, thus the firm would be producing at a lower average cost (Sloman, 2004). Due to certain reasons, the firm is likely to experience economics of scale. Such reasons are, labour specialization. When a firm hires more workers, a firm can divide jobs according to the employees’ specialization; therefore, production would become more efficient as employees are more efficient in their particular job. Besides that, the grater efficiency of larger machines, by-products and multi-stage production could allow firms to experience economics of scale. Firms may also experience economics of scale due to financial economies as large firms may be able to obtain finance at lower interest rates than smaller firms. In the section of diseconomies of scale, it shows that the cost per unit of each output starts to increase gradually at Q2. At this point, the firm becomes harder to manage as the firm becomes larger and the line of communication becomes longer (DBM CD, viewed 3rd July 3, 2007). Besides that, according to Sloman, (2004), workers may feel ‘alienated’ if their jobs are repetitive and boring and when they feel that they are a small part of the organization causing a poor motivation towards their work. All and all, these problems cause the firm’s average cost to increase. As a conclusion, production in the short-run is the production period of time over which at least one factor is fixed as production in the long-run is the production period of time long enough for all factors to be varied. Slavery position with writers essays

Slavery position with writers essays The issue of slavery in the nineteenth century produced an overwhelming issue in society. There were some writers that favored slavery and then there were some that did not favor slavery. In favor of slavery were William Gillmore Simms, and Caroline Hentz. Those opposed to slavery were Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry David Thoreau, and Herman Melville. All of these writers presented their views of slavery in the their literary works. William Simms was a supporter of slavery and this evident in his novel, Woodcraft. This novel takes place in the south during the closing of the Revolutionary War. Simms was born in Charleston, South Carolina, so he was raised on the souths position of pro-slavery. In Simms novel Woodcraft, he states, Exhaustion not wisdom, or a better state of feeling, was the secret of the peace which was finally concluded between the two nations (America and Great Britain), and of which, South Carolina, and Charleston in particular, was eagerly expecting the benefits. (Simms 35) Great Britain had spent most of the Revolutionary War occupying Charleston and the soldiers would stay at the peoples home with out the homeowners consent. This angered many townspeople in Charleston and many other townspeople throughout the south. Since the war was coming to an end the people of Charleston could have their city and homes again. Also meaning plantation owners and slaver owners could resume back t o their work of the land, which was the major source of economy in the south. During the Revolutionary War, Great Britain was re-stealing the slaves of slave owners in the south. In Woodcraft, it is stated, South Carolina had already lost twenty-five thousand slaves, which British philanthropy had transferred from the rice-fields of Carolina to the sugar estates of the West India Islands; and there were yet other thousands waiting to be similarly transport...

Org behavior - Assignment Example Less-sophisticated technological systems may allow for a flatter, horizontal structure that provides employees with more autonomous function. Employees in the organization may not have the tacit knowledge that some experts in the organization hold and do not always have access to face-to-face interventions with knowledge experts. Therefore, they become dependent on data from technology systems in order to guarantee effective knowledge transfer, such as using enterprise resource planning software to gain valuable real-time data occurring in the organization. For instance, customer service can access software to determine current inventory levels in order to ensure order fulfillment. This knowledge source (CSR) now holds knowledge no other individual in the organization carries from external sources. They can take this technology-driven knowledge to consult with production to temporarily double output in order to meet future demand. Technology maintains â€Å"a crucial role in enabling knowledge-centric practices† (Dataware Technologies, 2008, p.2). Having an understanding of the external market is one competency providing competitive advantage. Many organizations rely on differentiation strategies in order to build a brand that stands out uniquely from competitors. In order to create a more effective service model or product concept, the organization needs to conduct market research on consumer attitudes, behaviors, and needs to align operations and service to deliver these outputs. Another core competency is creating a unified organizational culture, using transformational leadership to gain commitment, loyalty and employee satisfaction (Fairholm, 2009). Human capital development in terms of coaching and training using elements of transformational style can give employees more transferrable knowledge within the organization and attitude that focuses on service excellence and total quality management of outputs.
